Years ago I listened to Ross Jeffery share his vision for a destination golf course in Canon City, Colorado. I said something like, “Well, Ross, if anyone can make a success of that, you’re the man for the job.” Then I backed away slowly avoiding any sudden moves. Canon City already had a course and isn’t a big town. Its destination attraction is Royal Gorge – typically, a family day trip…. To say the least, I expected problems at Four Mile Ranch. I’m happy to say that I was wrong.
I recently got a tour from Ross of Four Mile Ranch. All I can say is WOW. What a uniquely stunning achievement by course architect Jim Engh. The course kind of lays like 18 thin blankets over the arid landscape. The course is ecologically friendly too, its fed by a hot springs aquifer that provides warm water that melts any of the light snowfall the local micro-climate gets off the course. Play is nearly year round! I don’t have the time to go into it today but, please, don’t wait to get out there. The course is fantastic and its getting lots of play from all over Colorado.
